The DOOM source code was released by id Software on December 23, 1997, under the GNU General Public License, version 2. All source code in this repository derived from the original DOOM source code is licensed under GPL v2. Any modifications and platform-specific port code contributed to this repository are also released under GPL v2 unless otherwise noted.

WAD File Policy
WAD files contain the game data (levels, textures, sprites, sounds, music) and are separate from the source code. The WAD files are not covered by the GPL and have their own distribution rules.
Shareware WAD (DOOM1.WAD)
The DOOM shareware WAD (DOOM1.WAD) contains Episode 1: "Knee-Deep in the Dead" and may be freely distributed. This is the WAD used by the web player on this site. You can obtain it from numerous sources online, or from the Doom Wiki.
Registered / Commercial WADs
Commercial WADs can be legally obtained from:
This repository does not include any commercial WAD files and never will. Do not submit pull requests containing commercial WAD data.
Free / Community WADs
Community-created WADs and total conversions (such as Freedoom) that are released under open-source or free-content licenses may be used freely with these source ports. Freedoom provides a complete set of IWAD files that are compatible with the DOOM engine and are released under a BSD-style license.
